Lessons from the Sea-Part 4

Walking on Water

John 6:16-21

In today's passage Jesus has just finished feeding a whole country side of people with a few loaves of bread and a couple fish. This miracle was so astounding that the people wanted to crown Jesus king! But instead of accepting the glory, Jesus runs up into the mountains to get alone with God. I wonder if they were having a mission statement meeting, Jesus needing to be encouraged to continue the plan that led to Calvary...

Back to the story, the disciples waited for Jesus for a while, but then decide to get in the boat and get ahead of Jesus and start across the sea without him. A storm came up.

Can I just pause her for a second and point out how many times I have had a storm come up in my life because I got ahead of Jesus? Not all storms are caused by other people, or the world, or society, or politicians, or corrupt judges... Sometimes they come up simply because I got ahead of the plan and God's perfect timing.

Jesus shows up, anyways. Right in the middle of the storm and instantly saves them and gets the boat across the stormy sea. He wasn't even mad that they left without Him! The Passion Translation has Jesus saying, "Don't be afraid. You know who I am." We don't need to be afraid of anything because we know who Jesus is. He is the Alpha and Omega, and He alone has the power to instantly get us to the other side.

Have you ever gotten ahead of Jesus?

Who is Jesus to you?

How does this help you not to fear?
